Take a look with me in Hebrews 5, “About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity.”
Did you notice the author’s rebuke? Apparently, the Christians being addressed here had been Christians for long enough to be teachers of the Word but it was due to their lack of growth that kept them spiritually immature. They should have been at a place where they were ready for the deeper things of God but they were still only at a place where they could only grasp the basics of the faith. Now there is nothing wrong with the basics and elementary doctrine of Christ because it is the basics of Christianity where we learn the Gospel that saves. But the Christian should get to a point where their appetite of the Scriptures increases due to growing in maturity and they learn the deeper parts of Scripture which are available to all who are in Christ! So how do we keep from growing spiritually stagnant and go on to spiritual maturity in our Christian walk?
- Be a dedicated student of the Word: There is no wisdom available that is a greater help to mankind than the wisdom of the Scriptures. The Scriptures are what help us kill sin, grow in faith, trust God, and understand who God is and who we are. If you are going to grow in spiritual maturity then you must be a student of the Word.
- Be a disciplined prayer warrior: We grow towards spiritual maturity as we grow in obedience to the Word and knowledge of the Word. Both of those things don’t happen because of our ability but only through the power of the Spirit in us which means we need a lot of prayer in our lives. We must ask God to reveal the sin areas of our lives. We must ask God to give us understanding of the Scriptures. We must ask God for help in our growth.
Are you growing in your spiritual walk? I hope the answer is yes but if it is no then now is the time. Connect with a church if you are not already and ask others for help on how you can grow. Every Christian should be a growing Christian!
Love this Mikey! Encouraging others to grow in their relationship with Christ will change lives! God will reveal our purpose through our obedience so that we may grow and deepen our faith in Him!
